A big investment deal has come to light in India’s private banking sector. The country’s largest private bank Kotak Mahindra has got approval to buy up to 9.99 percent stake in AU Small Finance Bank. This step is being seen as a strategic investment and expansion in the banking sector.
AU Small Finance Bank informed in an exchange filing on Thursday that Kotak Mahindra Bank, including its associate companies, mutual funds and related schemes, has been allowed to acquire a maximum of 9.99 per cent stake or voting rights in the bank. This approval has been given by the Reserve Bank of India and it is being seen as a strategic investment in the banking sector.
Kotak already has stake
As per the shareholding pattern for the March 2026 quarter, Kotak Group’s Kotak Flexicap Fund already holds 1.60 per cent stake in AU Small Finance Bank. Apart from this, many big institutional investors also have a strong presence in the bank. These include big investors like HDFC Mutual Fund, Nippon Life India, Invesco Mutual Fund and DSP Midcap Fund. Talking about insurance companies, SBI Life Insurance and HDFC Life Insurance also have stake in AU Small Finance Bank. This clearly indicates that the confidence of institutional investors in the bank remains strong.
According to Trendlyne data, promoters’ stake in AU Small Finance Bank is 22.8 percent, while foreign institutional investors (FIIs) hold 37.3 percent. At the same time, the share of mutual funds is 23.2 percent and public shareholding is 8.1 percent.

During Thursday morning trading, shares of Kotak Mahindra Bank registered a rise of about 1 percent and the stock was seen trading around Rs 380. At the same time, shares of AU Small Finance Bank also increased by about 0.68 percent and were seen trading at the level of Rs 1,030. Market experts believe that this investment can prove to be strategically beneficial for both the banks in the future. This is likely to further strengthen competition in the small finance banking segment.
