11th Jyotirlinga: Where even gods worship
Kedarnath Dham is revered as the 11th Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The glory of this Dham is unique. It is believed that humans worship God here during the six months of summer, whereas in winter, when the doors are closed, the Gods themselves perform worship here. Baba’s doli is brought down during winter due to heavy snowfall. The worship of the Lord is performed for six months at his winter seat, Omkareshwar Temple, Ukhimath. Kedarnath Dham is worshiped as the first Kedar in the Panch Kedar of Uttarakhand.
Mythological importance of Kedarnath Dham
According to the Puranas, Kedarnath Dham is related to the Mahabharata period. It is said that after the Kurukshetra war, Pandavas came to the Himalayas in search of Lord Shiva to get rid of their sins. Lord Shiva had taken the form of a bull, and at the place where his back appeared, Kedarnath Dham was formed. Kedarnath is considered the gateway to salvation. Adi Guru Shankaracharya had renovated this temple.
