Madras High Court rejected the PIL filed against giving government jobs to the families of Karur stampede victims. The court said that the matter is already before the Madurai bench and the appointments will depend on its decision. CM Vijay had given appointment letters to the families of the victims.
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [भारत] July 17 (ANI): The Madras High Court has refused to hear a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by N Prabhakaran against granting government jobs to the family members of the Karur stampede victims. The court dismissed the petition saying that it had become infructuous as the matter was already sub judice before the Madurai bench. The Madras High Court also said that these appointments would depend on the outcome of the case pending before the Madurai Bench.
CM Vijay had distributed appointment letters
On July 10, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) President C Joseph Vijay visited Karur and participated in several government and party programs. This also included distribution of appointment letters of government jobs on compassionate grounds to the families of the victims of the 2025 Karur stampede.
Among those who received appointment letters is Vimal, who lost his one-and-a-half-year-old son Thruvish in the tragic stampede. Speaking to ANI before the event, Vimal said that despite the irreparable loss suffered by his family, he sees the government’s decision as a positive step.
Vimal told ANI, “My one-and-a-half-year-old son passed away. His name was Thruvish. When my son passed away, I had gone to Chennai to meet Mr. Vijay. He is now the Chief Minister and has come here. He had asked me to come and meet him. So, I am going to meet him. I have submitted the application forms at the taluk office as per the request. I don’t know what kind of job it will be. I will know only after meeting him. My son’s death is a great loss for me. Big loss. I don’t know what position they are going to give me. I don’t see it as a positive thing.”
The Chief Minister had handed over compassionate appointment letters to 32 legal heirs of the victims who lost their lives in the Karur stampede during a public relations program of TVK on September 27, 2025.
CBI is investigating the stampede case.
The stampede in Karur took place on September 27, 2025, during a rally of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay, leaving 41 people dead and several others injured.
In October 2025, the Supreme Court had transferred the investigation from the state-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), emphasizing the need for an independent and impartial investigation.
Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice N.V. Anjaria’s bench also constituted a three-member committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi to monitor the CBI investigation and ensure a fair investigation into the tragedy. Several aspects of the rally are being looked into in the investigation, including crowd-management arrangements, timing of Vijay’s arrival and coordination between party organizers and local authorities.
