Usually, in a T-20 match, apart from the playing 11, a team uses only impact players, due to which a total of 12 players become part of the match. But in this match, Mumbai also had to resort to concussion substitute, due to which 13 players of the team took part in this match. Actually, New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner got injured during the match. Santner suffered a shoulder injury while taking the catch of Karthik Sharma in the 17th over of the first innings. After which he was seen going out holding the shoulder. By that time he had completed his four overs, in which he took one wicket for 44 runs. As per the rules, Mumbai Indians included Shardul Thakur in the team as a concussion substitute.

Why did MI get concussion sub?

The concussion substitute rule applies when a player has suffered a head or neck injury during a match. In such a situation, there was an uproar on social media over this decision of the umpire. Some fans called it a wrong decision. Initially there was suspicion of a shoulder injury, but replays confirmed a head collision. Due to which Mumbai got permission for a new player.

Mumbai Indians had already used an impact player in the match. He had included Danish Malewar in the team in place of Allah Ghazanfar. Due to these two changes (one impact player + one concussion sub), a total of 13 players from Mumbai took part in this match. Such an incident has rarely been seen in IPL, due to which this decision of Mumbai surprised everyone.
