Then came that special day. On May 1, 1886, millions of workers went on strike in America. This was a big movement. Chicago city became its main centre. About three lakh workers joined this movement. Workers took to the streets. He took out rallies. They were putting forward their demands in a peaceful manner. This movement was a turning point in world history.

The movement became intense on 3 May 1886. There was a demonstration outside a factory. The police opened fire on the workers. Many workers were killed. This increased anger. A meeting was held in Haymarket Square on 4 May. The meeting was peaceful. People were talking about their rights. Then suddenly a bomb was thrown. It is not clear even today who threw the bomb. After this the police opened fire on the crowd. Many workers and policemen were killed. This incident is called Haymarket Affair.
Haymarket had an impact all over the world
After this incident many labor leaders were arrested. There was no concrete evidence against him. Still he was convicted. Eight leaders were prosecuted. Four were hanged. One committed suicide in jail. This incident raises questions on the justice system.
The Haymarket incident shocked the whole world. People understood the struggle of the workers. In the year 1889 an international conference was held in Paris. In this conference, it was decided to celebrate Labor Day on 1st May. This day became a symbol of workers’ unity.
