IIT Computer Science Seats: Do you want to take admission in Computer Science in IIT? Which IIT has the highest number of CSE seats? Which IITs have more chances of admission? What does JoSAA seat matrix 2026 say? How many seats are there for Computer Science in the total 23 IITs of the country?
IIT CSE Seat Matrix: Every year lakhs of students appear for JEE Advanced exam. Most of them aim to get admission in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) course in IIT. Even today CSE remains the most popular and most demanded branch of IITs. In such a situation, it becomes very important to understand from the last year’s seat matrix of JoSAA that how many Computer Science seats are available in the 23 IITs of the country and in which IIT the chances of admission are relatively higher.
How many seats for BTech CSE in total 23 IITs of the country?
According to last year’s seat matrix of JoSAA, a total of 2129 seats in Computer Science and Engineering are available in 23 IITs of the country. These include seats earmarked for General, Economically Weaker Section, Other Backward Class, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Disabled. Statistics show that the highest number of seats are in IIT Bombay, while in some of the new IITs the number of seats is still limited. The total seats for Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) in all 23 IITs of the country as per JoSAA seat matrix is given below. Maximum seats in IIT Bombay, maximum opportunities here too
If we look at the number of seats alone, IIT Bombay offers the largest computer science program in the country. There are total 198 seats in this branch. Top 10 IITs with most CSE seats:
1 IIT Bombay- 198
2 IIT (BHU) Varanasi – 155
3 IIT Kharagpur – 140
4 IIT (ISM) Dhanbad – 139
5 IIT Kanpur – 129
6 IIT Guwahati – 114
7 IIT Ropar- 120
8 IIT Roorkee- 109
9 IIT Delhi- 99
10 IIT Madras- 87
However, having more seats does not mean that admission will be easy. The highest ranked students of the country take admission in these institutes, hence the competition is extremely tough. There are approximately 198 seats available in IIT Bombay, including Gender-Neutral and Female-Only seats. This is the reason why despite the competition for CSE being extremely tough, the number of seats is more than other IITs.
There are more seats in the old IITs, but the competition is also the toughest.
The number of seats is relatively higher in older institutes like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati. This is the reason why these institutions are the first choice of most of the candidates.
Ignoring the new IIT may prove costly
Many students give preference to only the old and famous IITs, while new IITs are also growing rapidly. Institutions with least seats-
- IIT Palakkad- 40 seats
- IIT Jammu- 40 seats
- IIT Goa – 45 seats
- IIT Tirupati – 53 seats
- IIT Gandhinagar – 60 seats
Experts believe that the opportunities for education, research facilities and appointments in these institutions are continuously improving. In such a situation, filling the options only by looking at the past reputation of the institute is not considered the right strategy.
Increased opportunities for women candidates in IITs
In the last few years, IITs have emphasized on increasing the participation of girl students through Female Supernumerary Seats. This time too, female-only seats are available in almost all IITs. There are 39 female-only seats in IIT Bombay, 28 in IIT Kharagpur, 26 in IIT Kanpur, 22 in IIT Roorkee and 20 in IIT Delhi. This gives additional opportunities to the girl students and sometimes a positive impact is seen in the cutoff also.
Complete mathematics of CSE seats in 23 IITs
Of the total 2,129 seats, the largest share belongs to the Open and OBC-NCL categories. Adequate seats are also reserved for SC, ST and EWS categories. Separate seats are available for PwD category candidates. This seat matrix can help students to make better choice filling strategy as per their rank. Many times candidates fill the choices only after seeing the name of the institute, whereas the combined analysis of number of seats and previous years cutoff is helpful in taking a better decision.
Students preparing for IIT admission should keep these things in mind
If your aim is Computer Science in IIT, it would not be wise to depend only on IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi or IIT Madras. Seat analysis shows that a good number of seats are also available in institutes like IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Ropar. During JoSAA counselling, candidates should fill the choices keeping in mind their rank, category, seat availability and previous years opening-closing ranks. The right strategy can sometimes get you a CSE seat in an IIT despite a difference of a few hundred ranks.
