What are fast track courts?
‘Fast track’ means fast working court. This is not a completely separate building or separate structure, but the state governments, in consultation with the High Court, hand over the responsibility of special cases to some of the existing courts like the Sessions Court. Such cases are heard in these courts, which are considered necessary for quick disposal. Therefore, here the cases are given priority and the chances of getting repeated dates are less as compared to normal courts. Its main objective is to quickly dispose of sensitive and serious cases that drag on for years in the courts.
When was the fast track court started and how many fast track courts are there now?
For the first time in India, the creation of fast track courts was started in 2000 on the recommendation of the 11th Finance Commission. At present, more than 860 fast track courts across the country are hearing different serious cases.
How quickly does the decision come in fast track court?
The time for each case depends on its evidence, witnesses and legal process, so no single fixed time applies to all cases. However, the objective of a fast track court is usually to complete the hearing and deliver a final verdict within 6 months or a specified deadline. In such courts, there is less permission to postpone the hearing of cases and sometimes testimony is recorded on a day-to-day basis. Senior or experienced judges are deployed in these to dispose of the cases quickly and without any hindrance.
What is the difference between normal court and fast track court?
| general court | fast track court |
|---|---|

| Sometimes it takes years to reach a decision | Efforts are made to give decision in less time |

The disposal rate of cases in these special courts has been 96.28%, that is, almost the same number of cases were disposed of as new cases were registered. In view of this success, now preparations are being made to send the cases of paper leak and fraud to fast track court, so that the accused can be sent to jail immediately.
What is the way forward after fast track court?
The decision coming from the fast track court does not mean that all the legal avenues of the accused have been closed.
