The last date for filing the Income Tax Returns has been closed on July 31, and the department has said that a total of 5.9 crore returns were filed till date.
Last year, the deadline for filing the ITR was extended till September 16, and the total number of ITR filed were over 7.3 crore.
According to official data, including revised returns, 8.7 crore returns were filed by individuals in FY2024-25, with a little less than 8.1 crore return filers in the segment.
“Your trust and timely compliance provide the energy that fuels India’s growth,” the Central Board of Direct Taxes said in a post on X.
The numbers for this year are likely to be lower as govt had announced major tax concessions during the last financial year, with income up to Rs 12 lakh.
Those earning income from a business or profession continue to have more time, with their ITR filing deadline set for August 31, 2026, subject to the applicable provisions.
There has been no update from the Income Tax Department as of now on extension of date.
Individuals and entities required to file for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 relating to Financial Year (FY) 2025-26 must submit their income tax returns by August 31, 2026.
For those who failed to file the ITR within the deadline, they still have a few options to regularise their tax compliance, although doing so may involve additional costs and certain restrictions.
In case the taxpayers have missed the original due date, there are two routes available for them.
First is to submit a condonation of delay application. If the Income Tax Department accepts the request, the taxpayer can proceed with filing the return. The second option is to file a belated ITR after paying the applicable late filing fee.
