Mumbai (Maharashtra) [भारत]July 21 (ANI): On the occasion of World Chess Day on Monday, the Global Chess League (GCL) announced the return of ‘Road2GCL’. This is a community initiative of GCL, which will be organized ahead of Season 4 to be held in Bengaluru from 3-14 September.
What is ‘Road2GCL’ initiative?
According to a press release from GCL, the initiative will roll out in phases over the coming weeks. It will bring together players, clubs, schools, creators and chess enthusiasts through competitions, community events and collaborations with creators. The aim is to take the league experience beyond just tournaments.
At the core of this initiative is the belief that the journey to the Global Chess League should be as exciting as the tournament itself. Through a series of initiatives being held ahead of Season 4, it aims to create meaningful opportunities for players, clubs, schools, creators and fans to engage with the game and become part of the League’s growing community.
Opportunity for emerging talents in ‘Road2GCL Contenders’
The initiative is being led by ‘Road2GCL Contenders’, a competition that will provide emerging players the opportunity to compete against the stars of the Global Chess League through a multi-tier qualification process, culminating in an exclusive tie-up. In its first edition, Jose Martínez (Open), WGM Mai Narva (Women) and IM Faustino Oro (Under-21) emerged as champions in their respective categories. This year’s competition will once again focus on the emerging talents of the chess community.
GCL Commissioner told the vision of the league
Commenting on the launch, Gaurav Rakshit, Commissioner of the Global Chess League, said, “The Global Chess League was created to reimagine what the chess experience should be like, not just during tournaments, but throughout the season. ‘Road2GCL’ reflects that vision, creating opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to connect with the game, connect with the broader chess community and be part of the Season 4 journey as the game grows. “Initiatives like this help make chess more accessible, participatory and culturally relevant.”
Magnus Carlsen will be seen in GCL Season 4
Season 4, to be held from September 3-14 in Bengaluru, will once again bring together 36 of the world’s leading Grandmasters across six franchises. These include current World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, who is making a comeback in the Global Chess League and will be competing in India for the first time. This season will also witness the much-awaited league debut of reigning FIDE Women’s World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh, adding another exciting dimension to one of the strongest player fields ever assembled in franchise chess.
‘Shining Stars’ and ‘Creators’ programs also included
‘Road2GCL’ will also include ‘Shining Stars’, which will bring community-based chess activities to clubs and educational institutions. There will also be ‘Road2GCL Creators’, a creator-led program designed to introduce new viewers to the Season 4 journey.
Since its launch, the Global Chess League has introduced several innovations, including a mixed-team franchise format, unique icon boards, and simultaneous team battles featuring many of the world’s leading Grandmasters. ‘Road2GCL’ extends that philosophy beyond the tournament, giving players and fans new ways to be a part of the league before the first move is made in Bengaluru.
