Glenn Maxwell Announces Retirement from International Cricket, Continues with T20 Leagues

In Melbourne, renowned Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has decided to retire from international cricket.

The 38-year-old has stepped away from T20 internationals, having previously announced his retirement from One Day Internationals in June 2025. However, his cricketing journey is far from over as he will continue to participate in domestic T20 competitions, representing the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL) until the end of the 2027-28 season. Additionally, there are still possibilities for him to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Final International Match and Career Highlights

Maxwell’s last appearance in international cricket was during the T20 World Cup in February 2026 against Oman, marking Australia’s final group stage match in the tournament. Following this, he has chosen to distance himself from T20 internationals, having already retired from List A and first-class cricket. This decision signifies the end of his extensive journey in international and traditional domestic cricket, as he now focuses on T20 league cricket.

Throughout his T20 international career, which began in 2012 against Pakistan, Maxwell played 130 matches and scored 2,897 runs, ranking third among Australia’s highest run-scorers in this format. He has also recorded five centuries in T20 internationals, matching the tally of former Indian captain Rohit Sharma.

Contributions Beyond T20

In addition to his T20 achievements, Maxwell has contributed to Australia’s Test cricket, playing seven matches and accumulating 339 runs, with his sole Test century coming against India in Ranchi in 2017, showcasing his skills in challenging conditions.

Retirement Discussions and Future Plans

Maxwell revealed that discussions regarding his retirement had been ongoing with the team management for some time. In a podcast, he mentioned that conversations took place both before and after the T20 World Cup. He clarified that there was no pressure from the management to retire or leave the team, as they kept the option for his return open based on circumstances.

He emphasized that his decision was not influenced by any pressure or lack of opportunities within the team but was a thoughtful conclusion regarding his future and the next phase of his cricket career.

Desire for a Farewell Match at MCG

Before retiring from international cricket, Maxwell had hoped to play a memorable farewell match at his home ground, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). There is a T20 international match scheduled against England during Australia’s upcoming limited-overs tour, and he was optimistic that Cricket Australia would grant him the chance to don the international jersey one last time in front of his home crowd.

He expressed that T20 cricket has been a significant part of his life for the past 15 years, making it feel like home, which is why he wished to conclude his international career in Melbourne.

Focus on T20 Leagues Post-Retirement

Maxwell’s retirement from international cricket marks a significant transition for Australian cricket. His aggressive batting, useful bowling, and exceptional fielding have been vital for the team in numerous crucial matches, particularly in T20 formats. Fans will still have the opportunity to watch him play, as he remains contracted with the Melbourne Stars until the 2027-28 season and may also participate in the IPL.

His immediate goal is to fully recover from a knee injury and regain his fitness ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League season, ensuring he can contribute effectively for the Melbourne Stars.
