During this time, the ashram of Rishi Jahnu was destroyed due to the tremendous speed of Ganga. Seeing this, the sage became angry and drank all the water of Ganga. Seeing this, all the gods including King Bhagiratha apologized to him and requested him to free the Devnadi Ganga. When sage Jahnu saw that Devnadi Ganga had come to earth for the welfare of the people, he made Ganga flow from his ear.
The day when Sage Jahnu freed the Devnadi Ganga from his ear, it was the Saptami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month. Since then, the festival of Ganga Saptami is celebrated every year on this date. Due to Rishi Jahnu drinking it and then freeing it, the Devan river Ganga became known as his daughter Jahnavi.
On the day of Ganga Saptami, lakhs of devotees come and worship on the banks of river Ganga. It is written in religious texts that bathing in Ganga on this day gives special results.
