Namakkal of Tamil Nadu is called the Egg City of India.

The largest production of eggs in the world is in China. India is at second position. Some selected states of the country are known for the maximum production of eggs, but there is one city which is called Egg City. Namakkal of Tamil Nadu alone produces 7 crore eggs daily. This is the reason why it is called the hub of export of eggs.

Namakkal eggs are exported to UAE, Qatar and African countries. Recently America has also joined the list, where eggs from Namakkal have started arriving. For the first time, eggs have been exported from here to the United States. Depending on the response from the American market, exports may increase further. How did Namakkal become the hub of eggs?

Namakkal, known as the ‘Egg City’ of India, has 1,200 poultry farms. Which produces 7 crore eggs daily. These eggs are mainly sent to states like Kerala, Karnataka and Puducherry, and are also distributed to schools under the food scheme of Tamil Nadu.

In the late 1960s, some people involved in the transport business in Namakkal started poultry farming. Gradually, local people started getting involved in this rapidly growing profitable deal. By the 1990s, there were more than 5,000 poultry farms in the city. These farms moved into multi-story buildings in the late 1990s.

Due to the increasing scope of technology and modern methodsThe number of people running small-scale poultry farms decreased, and the number of poultry farms dropped from 5,000 to 1,100. However, the number of eggs increased as there were 10,000 to 2,00,000 hens in a group. Presently the number of forms has increased to 1200.

The government also played a big role in making Namakkal a hub for eggs. National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) was formed to provide right price to the farmers. Veterinary College was opened in 1985. This also provided scientific support for sustainability of the poultry industry.

Why has the demand for Namakkal eggs increased?

Due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, poultry feed became expensive in many countries. Namakkal got the benefit of this. According to the report of Poultry India, Namakkal has 95 percent share in the eggs exported from India to many countries of the world. Not only this, the international standards of Indian eggs are under threat. This is also one of the reasons for increasing demand. Compared to other countries, Indian eggs are cheaper. It is produced on a large scale in India and this industry has received a lot of help from the government. As a result, it flourished.

According to the report of Poultry India, India ranks second in global egg production. Middle Eastern countries including Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, Maldives and many African countries are buyers of Indian eggs. Oman is the largest importer of Indian eggs.
