Once diabetes occurs, it is advised to control it throughout life with medicines and better lifestyle. This is a never-ending disease, so to avoid it, one should be alert to take care of the body from an early age. Do you know that after the age of 35, if someone remains under constant stress then he gets affected by type 2 diabetes. WHO says Diabetes has become a major crisis in India.

According to statistics, about 10 crore Indians are suffering from diabetes. In this, more than 7.7 crore people above the age of 18 years have developed type 2 diabetes while 2.5 crore are said to be pre-diabetic. That is why India is also called Diabetes Capital of the World.

The main reasons for diabetes are considered to be poor eating habits, not being physically active and genetics. But does this also happen due to mental stress? On this, TV9 talked to Dr. Sanchayan Roy of Apollo Spectra Hospital, Delhi. Know what experts say?

Is mental stress also the cause of diabetes?

Dr. Sanchayan Roy (Senior Consultant – Internal Medicine, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Delhi) Stress alone is not the direct cause of diabetes, but long-term stress can increase the risk of this disease. When a person is constantly under stress, the levels of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenalin increase in the body.

These hormones work to increase blood sugar so that the body can face stressful situations. If this condition persists for a long time, the efficiency of insulin in the body may be affected and the risk of developing insulin resistance may increase, which is a major cause of type-2 diabetes.

Effect of stress on lifestyle

The expert further said that stress also affects our lifestyle. People living under constant stress can often turn to habits like irregular eating habits, excessive junk food consumption, less physical activity, poor sleep and smoking or alcohol. All these factors further increase the risk of diabetes. Therefore, to prevent diabetes, it is not only important to take care of diet and exercise, but it is also equally important to take care of mental health.

Do these things daily for protection

Regular exercise- Experts say that you should be physically active for a few minutes every day. People above 35 years of age can exercise in the gym. People above 50 years of age can go for a walk in the morning and evening. Many researches have revealed that walking for some time is best in controlling diabetes. Apart from this, this method also reduces the risk of getting this serious disease.

Adequate sleep- Nowadays people take less sleep due to busy lifestyle. Use of mobile is also a major reason for lack of sleep. Not keeping screen limits disturbs the sleep system. In such a situation, there is mental stress and gradually-

Yoga and meditation- Activities that control stress can help balance blood sugar and improve overall health.
