New Delhi: In a shocking incident reported from central Delhi’s Ranjit Nagar, a 70-year-old woman was raped inside her own house. The accused, a 27-year-old man, was arrested by the police. According to reports, the accused had entered the house of the elderly woman on pretext of asking for water. He later returned and sexually abused her.
Accused recede house on first visit, knew woman lived alone: Police
According to a report in the Times of India, the accused first visited the house of the woman on April 9. He asked her for some water. As she was away, he noticed that the woman was alone in the house. On his next visit, which was 2 days later, the man entered her home forcibly and assaulted her. He then proceeded to rape her, said police officials.
A PCR call was made just hours after the incident. But the caller only informed the police personnel about a physical assault on an elderly lady. After reaching the spot, the police team took the woman to the hospital. Her medico-legal examination confirmed the assault. Based on these reports, the Delhi Police registered a case of causing hurt and criminal intimidation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
It was only a day later that sexual assault was confirmed, after the woman confided about it in her daughter. Her daughter immediately informed the police regarding the rape. The woman was then taken to the hospital for a second round of medical examination. It was then that rape was confirmed. The DCP (central) Rohit Rajbir Singh, said that following the confirmation of sexual assault, additional sections of the BNS were added in the case.
Accused identified, arrested: Officials
Following the registration of the complaint, the police began searching for the accused. They scanned CCTV footage from the surrounding areas. They noticed a suspicion man loitering around the woman’s home.
The suspect was seen entering and exiting the house of the survivor, around the time the woman had said in her complaint that she was raped. Based on the footage, using technical and ground surveillance, and inputs from informers, the police zeroed in on the accused. He was identified as Mukesh, a resident of Baljeet Nagar.
The police team tracked him down to Delhi’s Pandav Nagar area. He was arrested on April 13.
Upon questioning, the man revealed that he first visited the woman and recede her house as she went in to bring water for him. He then returned after 2 days and raped and assaulted her. The police have sent him to judicial custody and investigations are on in the matter.
