Deepika Padukone, who made her Bollywood debut with ‘Om Shanti Om’, did not charge any fee for the film. After his first hit film, Shahrukh Khan gave a big statement in a funny manner.
Deepika Padukone is counted among the highest paid actresses in Bollywood today. She is a successful actress and has been a part of many films of 100 crore club. Deepika started her career in a very simple way. Interestingly, he did not even charge any fees for his first Bollywood film ‘Om Shanti Om’.
Started acting with Kannada film ‘Aishwarya’
Deepika Padukone entered the acting world in 2006 with director Indrajit Lankesh’s Kannada romantic film ‘Aishwarya’. Actor Upendra was seen with her in this film. Recently in a podcast, Indrajit Lankesh told that in the very first meeting he had realized that Deepika has all the qualities to become a star. His confidence, screen presence and passion to prove himself made him different from other actors.
She was ready for the film after hearing just one line.
The director revealed that Deepika had agreed to ‘Aishwarya’ after hearing only one line of the story of the film. His manager at that time was Pooja Dadlani, who is today Shahrukh Khan’s manager. The film proved to be a good hit in Karnataka after its release and ran for 50 days in theatres. Its success gave Deepika a new identity.
Shahrukh Khan had said a big thing jokingly
Indrajit Lankesh also shared an interesting anecdote. He told that when Shahrukh Khan came to Bengaluru, he was asked about the success of ‘Aishwarya’. On this, Shahrukh smiled and said, ‘I have heard that the film has become a big hit, now I will have to pay more money to him.’ This was said jokingly, but it was clear that Deepika’s success had attracted everyone’s attention.
No fees charged for ‘Om Shanti Om’
After the success of ‘Aishwarya’, director Farah Khan cast Deepika opposite Shahrukh Khan in ‘Om Shanti Om’. According to reports, Deepika did not take any fees for this film. The biggest opportunity for him was to debut in Bollywood with Shahrukh Khan. This film proved to be the turning point of his career. In the film, she won the hearts of the audience with the double role of Shantipriya and Sandy. After its release, ‘Om Shanti Om’ became one of the biggest hits of 2007 and Deepika became an overnight star.
‘Deepika’s career is a case study’
Indrajit Lankesh believes that Deepika’s film journey is a ‘case study’ for new artists. According to him, some people become actors, while others are born stars and Deepika falls in the second category. He told that initially Deepika was a little nervous in front of the camera, but within some time she controlled herself. Discipline, hard work and constant desire to better herself made her one of the greatest actresses in the industry.
After ‘Om Shanti Om’, Deepika acted in many superhit films like ‘Love Aaj Kal’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Chennai Express’, ‘Cocktail’, ‘Padmavat’, ‘Pathan’, ‘Jawaan’ and ‘Kalki 2898 AD’. The audience likes the on-screen pairing of Shahrukh Khan and Deepika very much.
