glasgow [स्कॉटलैंड]July 25 (ANI): India has opened its medal account in the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Jhandu Kumar won a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting final in Glasgow early Saturday morning (IST).

Zhandu secured her place on the podium with a best lift of 190 kg with a score of 130.9 points. He made a strong start with a lift of 181 kg in his first attempt and scored 124.7 points. After this, in the second lift, he improved his performance and lifted 190 kg, which took him to the top of the standings for some time. In her final attempt, Zhandu tried to lift 196 kg, which would have broken the Commonwealth Games meet record set at Birmingham 2022. However, he could not complete the lift and ultimately had to settle for a bronze medal.

Other Indian athletes missed medals

Earlier, India’s lightweight para powerlifters missed out on a medal. Ashok finished fourth in the men’s final with his personal best lift of 200 kg, scoring 143.8 points, while Paramjeet Kumar finished seventh with 176 kg and 135.6 points.

Meanwhile, in the women’s lightweight category, Jaspreet Kaur stood sixth with a lift of 100 kg with a score of 96.4 points, while Suman Devi stood seventh with a best lift of 100 kg and a score of 88.4 points. Meanwhile, Kasturi Rajamani failed to register a single valid lift in the women’s heavyweight final as all three of her attempts failed.
