New Delhi [भारत]July 28 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Indian para-athlete Shilpa Kanchugarakoplu Shayla on winning a bronze medal in the women’s shot put F57 final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Posting on Instagram, PM Modi praised Shilpa’s performance and highlighted her personal best throw at the event. Journey from fourth place to bronze medal
According to ESPN, Shilpa had originally finished fourth with a personal best throw of 7.26 metres, but moved to the podium after Nigerian athlete Iyazzi’s result was cancelled. In the revised standings, fellow Indian Sharmila Dhankhar retained the gold medal with a season’s best effort of 9.81m, while Ghana’s Zinabu Issah won the silver with 8.65m.
The journey was full of difficulties
Shilpa’s medal also marks an important personal milestone for the para-athlete from Karnataka, whose journey to the Commonwealth podium was built on resilience and perseverance. Born in Kanchigara Koppalu village in Mysuru district, Shilpa lost her left leg when she was hit by a speeding truck at the age of four. Despite this life-changing accident, she completed her education, completing a postgraduate degree and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), and initially worked as a school teacher before turning to para-athletics.
His personal best throw of 7.26m in Glasgow had initially ruled him out of the medals, but an official review and subsequent disqualification of the Nigerian athlete gave him a deserved bronze medal, giving India its first double podium finish in the same event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
