Collin Morikawa, a two-time major champion, is striving for his second PGA Championship title while grappling with persistent back problems.
The event takes place at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
Morikawa’s back issues began during the Players Championship in March, leading to his withdrawal from several tournaments this season. Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic about his performance as he prepares for the championship.
Challenges with Back Issues
The 29-year-old golfer has faced a tumultuous season marked by injuries, including a significant withdrawal from The Players Championship. This setback interrupted a promising start that included his first victory in nearly two years.
Morikawa expressed, “I wish I was 100% healthy. The body doesn’t feel bad, just it’s uncomfortable, and there’s a trust factor.” He continues to adapt to the uncertainties that accompany his condition.
Recent Performances
Following his withdrawal from the Texas Open before the Masters, Morikawa managed a tie for seventh at Augusta National despite ongoing discomfort. He later placed fourth at Hilton Head, though his recent performance at Doral fell short, finishing tied for 62nd.
Morikawa chose to skip the Truist Championship last week, a decision that reflects his ongoing adjustments to his training and competition schedule.
Mental Approach to the Game
As he navigates physical challenges, Morikawa has shifted his focus toward enhancing his mental game. He recognizes that a strong mental approach is crucial for success, especially under current circumstances.
“The mental game is a big aspect of it,” he noted, highlighting the importance of perseverance in the face of discomfort during recent tournaments.
Looking Ahead
Morikawa is determined to reclaim his status as a top competitor in golf, recalling his victories at the PGA Championship in 2020 and the British Open in 2021. He stated, “It’s a long time, and you don’t forget the win, and you don’t forget that you can do it, but I think that’s just more motivation to go out there and knock another one out.”
As he prepares for the PGA Championship, he aims to leverage his experience and mental resilience to secure another major title.
