The Chicago Sky have commenced the WNBA season with an impressive 3-1 record, showcasing their potential as a competitive team. However, concerns arise regarding the health of young star Rickea Jackson, who sustained a non-contact injury to her left knee during a victory against Minnesota on Sunday.
Jackson’s injury occurred in the second quarter, prompting the team to schedule imaging for Monday to assess the damage. The Sky will return home to face the Dallas Wings on Wednesday, aiming to maintain their strong start despite the injury challenges they are currently facing.
Injury Updates
Coach Tyler Marsh provided an update on Jackson’s condition, stating, “She’s in decent spirits. We’re waiting to evaluate everything, but she was proud of the team for continuing to fight while she was out.” Jackson, a 6-foot-2 forward, was acquired in the offseason from Los Angeles and was averaging 22 points per game prior to her injury.
The Sky are already dealing with other injuries, as DiJonai Carrington (foot), Azura Stevens (knee), and Courtney Vandersloot (knee) have yet to make their season debuts. Additionally, Skylar Diggins, who joined as a free agent this offseason, missed Sunday’s game due to an eye injury.
Team Performance
Despite the injury setbacks, Marsh expressed pride in the team’s performance during their season-opening road trip, stating, “We’re all extremely pleased and proud to come away with this road trip 3-1 and looking forward to getting back home.” The Sky will play their next four games at home, providing an opportunity to build on their early success.
Power Poll Rankings
In the latest power poll rankings, the Las Vegas Aces maintained their position as the top team, winning four straight after an opening loss to Phoenix. The New York Liberty and Atlanta Dream secured the second and third spots, respectively, while the Chicago Sky made a notable jump to fourth place, rising six spots. Phoenix and Minnesota follow the Sky in the rankings, with Washington, Golden State, and Indiana rounding out the top teams.
Dallas, Toronto, and Los Angeles occupy the 10th to 12th positions, while Portland, Seattle, and Connecticut complete the rankings.
Stat Highlights
A recent stat correction credited Caitlin Clark with two additional assists in her game against Washington, bringing her total to 10 and setting a new WNBA record. Clark’s achievement marked her 11th career game with at least 20 points and 10 assists, surpassing Courtney Vandersloot for the most in league history. She continued her impressive performance with a 12th game on Sunday.
Early Season Struggles
The Connecticut Sun have faced a challenging start to the season, losing their first four games for the second consecutive year. Compounding their difficulties, three of these losses were against the New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces. The Sun will embark on a five-game West Coast trip, including two matches against the expansion Portland Fire. Recently, the WNBA approved the sale and relocation of the Sun to Houston for the next season.
Player of the Week
A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces earned the AP Player of the Week honor, averaging 24.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks to help her team secure four wins in their first five games. Notably, Wilson scored 45 points in a recent victory over the Connecticut Sun, achieving a WNBA record by scoring over 40 points in a game for the fifth time in her career. Other players receiving votes included Caitlin Clark of Indiana, Allisha Gray of Atlanta, and Breanna Stewart of New York.
Upcoming Match
This week’s featured game will be Dallas at New York on Sunday. The Wings have encountered early struggles, with coach Jose Fernandez expressing concerns over “selfishness” following a loss to Minnesota last Thursday. This matchup will conclude a three-game road trip for Dallas.
