DigiLocker Rules: Can the traffic police seize your vehicle even after showing the driving license and RC present in DigiLocker or mParivahan? Know the rules of Motor Vehicle Act.
In the era of Digital India, it has now become common to keep important vehicle documents like driving license, RC, insurance and PUC in the mobile instead of keeping them in the pocket. Government apps like DigiLocker and mParivahan have increased the convenience of drivers. But recently, after a video went viral on social media, a big question has arisen in the minds of people – if all the documents are present in DigiLocker, can the traffic police still seize your car or bike? Let us know what the rules say and under what circumstances action can be taken.
How valid are the digital documents of DigiLocker and mParivahan?
Under the Digital India campaign of the Government of India, vehicle related documents available in DigiLocker and mParivahan are legally recognized. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Driving License (DL), Registration Certificate (RC), Insurance and other digital documents present in these apps are considered valid during normal verification.
However, it is important to understand one important thing here. Only live digital documents in DigiLocker or mParivahan app are accepted. If you show photos saved in the mobile gallery, screenshots, copies sent on WhatsApp or photocopies, they will not be considered as official documents.

Under what circumstances can the traffic police seize the vehicle?
Mere presence of documents in DigiLocker does not guarantee that the vehicle will not be confiscated in every situation. If the validity of your documents has expired, the driving license is invalid, the RC is fake or the vehicle is caught violating any serious traffic rule, the traffic police can take action under the Motor Vehicle Act. In such circumstances, the concerned authorities also have the right to seize the vehicle. Therefore, having digital documents is beneficial only if they are completely valid and updated.
Keep these things in mind before driving
If you use DigiLocker or mParivahan, be sure to check the validity of your driving license, RC, insurance and pollution certificate (PUC) from time to time. Always show live documents within the app during testing. Apart from this, keep sufficient battery of the mobile before leaving for the trip, so that the documents can be easily presented when needed. Experts believe that digital documents definitely provide convenience, but it is the responsibility of every driver to follow traffic rules and maintain valid documents.
