Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections are set for June 7, 2026, the BCB Election Commission announced on Saturday, May 17. This marks a fresh electoral process following the dissolution of the previous board amid serious allegations of irregularities.
The councillors (general members) will elect 23 out of 25 board directors on election day. From this pool of 25, the new BCB president will then be chosen to serve a four-year term. Voting is scheduled from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the BCB Board Room in Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur, with results expected by 6:00 PM. Postal and e-ballots can be submitted until June 6.
Current Leadership
Tamim Iqbal, the former Bangladesh captain and current president of the ad-hoc committee (appointed by the government in early April 2026), is among the councillors. He is expected to oversee both the directors’ and president’s elections. Tamim, at 37, became the youngest BCB president when he took charge of the 11-member interim body, which has a mandate to organize fresh polls and manage day-to-day cricket operations.
Background on Previous ElectionsThe previous BCB elections took place in October 2025, where another former captain, Aminul Islam Bulbul, secured a sweeping victory. However, a government investigation later uncovered “serious abuse of power,” including unauthorized unilateral nominations of councillors (particularly 10 former cricketers in Category 3), which allegedly influenced outcomes. This led to the dissolution of Aminul’s board in April 2026.
Only a handful of directors from Aminul’s previous board are expected to participate this time. Aminul himself is reportedly in Australia, and former BCB president Faruque Ahmed (aligned with his group) is also not contesting.Election StructureElections will be held across three main categories for the 23 elected directors:
10 directors – From divisions and districts across Bangladesh.
12 directors – From representatives of Dhaka clubs.
1 director – From a pool including former cricketers, national captains, security forces representatives, and councillors nominated by the National Sports Council (NSC).
The Bangladesh government will directly appoint the remaining two directors to complete the 25-member board.
The draft voters’ list for selecting the 23 directors was published on Sunday, May 18, with the final list due later this week. The High Court recently cleared any legal hurdles, paving the way for the polls to proceed as scheduled.
This election is seen as a significant reset for Bangladesh cricket administration, coming shortly after the ad-hoc committee’s formation. Tamim has expressed interest in contesting for the full-term presidency to implement his long-term vision for the sport.
