BCCI not under ambit of RTI law, rules CIC; All you need to know

New Delhi: In a major verdict, the Central Information Commission (CIC) has ruled that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will remain exempt from the ambit of the Right To Information (RTI) Act as it does not qualify as a ‘public authority’. The order was passed by Information Commissioner PR Ramesh on Monday, May 18.

In its order, CIC ruled that the BCCI does not fall within the ambit of “public authority” under the RTI Act and is thus exempted from the provisions of the law. CIC stated that BCCI is an autonomous private body, governed by its own rules and regulations and financially independent.

CIC said that certain tax exemptions or statutory concessions provided to the cricket board by the government cannot qualify as funding, keeping the organisation outside of the ambit of the RTI Act.
