Prabhash Mandal, the main accused in the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur, West Bengal, has been killed by the police in an encounter. Police say that while collecting evidence the accused tried to run away.

Kolkata: Prabhash Mandal, the main accused in the gangrape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur, West Bengal, has been killed by the police in an encounter. The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday, when the police had taken him to the crime scene to collect evidence. According to officials, Prabhash tried to run away by snatching a policeman’s gun, following which he was shot in retaliation.

The police team with the accused reached Suryapur Haat area at around 12:45 in the morning, where the body of the girl was found. As the action was about to begin, Prabhash Mandal snatched the service revolver of a police officer. He fired one round at the police team and started running away. After this the police retaliated, in which the accused was seriously injured. He was immediately taken to Baruipur Hospital, but doctors declared him dead. Let us tell you that the girl had gone missing on July 4 and the next day her dead body was found in a sack. After this incident, there was huge anger and violence in the area.

Chief Minister asked for report

After the girl’s body was found, an angry mob blocked roads, burnt tires and vandalized police vehicles. During the same violence, the mob thrashed a youth named Indrajit Mandal to death on suspicion of his involvement in the crime. However, police investigation revealed that Indrajit Mandal was completely innocent.

In view of the increasing public anger over the matter, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari himself has intervened. He has given strict instructions to Director General of Police (DGP) Siddhanth Gupta to submit a detailed report within 72 hours. After meeting the girl’s family, the Chief Minister told the media that if even one percent negligence is found on the part of the police in registering the case or investigating, then strict action will be taken.

He also made it clear that around 200 miscreants who damaged government property have been identified and those who killed the innocent youth will be prosecuted for murder. Apart from this, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has also assured to build a new police post in Suryapur and provide necessary compensation to the victim’s family. At present, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of six members has been formed to investigate the case.
