UPI AutoPay Alert Viral Post: A post is going viral on Linkedin, in which it is told how a person got a big shock while teaching his mother to use UPI. How was his mother falling victim to the AutoPay trap? See viral post.
Viral Linkedin Post: Digital payments have made our lives easier than ever. But there are some risks associated with this facility, which most people do not understand in time. An incident that happened with a person from Mumbai has once again raised the question whether we are using UPI but also understanding the conditions related to it properly?
Mother got a big shock while explaining the use of UPI
Actually, Lokesh Ahuja, a Mumbai resident and working as Assistant Vice President (Brand Management) at Nykaa, shared an experience on the social media platform LinkedIn. He told that a few months ago he had taught his mother to use UPI. Meanwhile, when he looked at their UPI settings, he saw many active AutoPay Mandates. When he asked his mother for which service, she replied that she had not taken any kind of subscription.
Free trial ended, but approval to deduct money had already been received
Upon investigation, it was found that all these AutoPay Mandates were related to free trial offers, in which the first few days or one month is given free. However, at the same time, permission is also taken from the user to automatically deduct money every month. If the subscription is not canceled on time, then after the trial ends, the fixed amount starts being deducted from the account every month. According to Lokesh, small amounts like ₹79 or ₹99 often escape people’s notice because there are already many UPI transactions present in the bank statement. In such a situation, a regularly disconnected charge may remain unnoticed for a long time. See viral post below-

Today’s biggest need is digital intelligence
In his post he said that the biggest danger in today’s internet world is not buying the wrong thing, but agreeing to a condition without complete information. Options like AutoPay, app permissions, location access, and recurring subscriptions are approved in seconds, but their impact can last for months. He wrote in an emotional tone that once upon a time parents used to teach children to cross the road, but now it is the responsibility of children to teach their parents to be safe in the internet world.
People also expressed concern on social media
A large number of people expressed their opinion on this post. Many users said that the one-time payment option is not clearly visible on many payment pages and the AutoPay process starts directly. Some people said that they also came to know only when the money was deducted in the next month. Many users believe that digital awareness is as important as digital payments.

How to avoid unwanted AutoPay?
- Check Active AutoPay Mandates by visiting the UPI app from time to time.
- While taking the free trial, please read its terms and conditions and auto debit permission.
- Cancel AutoPay immediately for any service you no longer want to use.
- Explain the rules related to UPI and digital subscription in simple language to the elders of the family.
Digital literacy today means not just learning how to operate UPI, but also understanding which service you have given permission to deduct money from your bank account in the future. A little caution can save you from unwanted expenses in the long run.
