A decade ago, Atif Aslam was among the most loved playback singers in Bollywood, with several chartbusters to his credit. However, following the ban on Pakistani artistes, he was barred from working in the Indian film industry. According to him, the development has been a blessing in disguise as he went on to focus on creating his own music. The Aadat singer recently opened up about his journey after the ban and even thanked the Indian government, saying the move pushed him towards making independent music. The Pehli Nazar Mein hitmaker also claimed that his Indian fans continue to listen to his songs via VPN despite the nationwide boycott and that his music still finds love across the border. Addressing Indian Aadeez (his fans), Atif said that while he does not miss working in Bollywood, he certainly misses his fans.
Atif Aslam On Ban In India
During a chat with Kris Fade, said, “It’s been almost 10 years since I was banned in India. That was the decision of the Indian government; they decided to ban artistes from .” He added that Indian artistes are also banned there.
The Tu Jaane Na singer further said, “For the past 10 years, I haven’t done a song there. My fans are listening over VPN and they burn the CDs and give them to people. Not that I appreciate piracy, but music will reach wherever it has to reach.”
Atif said that this was exactly how he initially found success after releasing his first single. He added that those who truly love his music know where to find him and his songs. Addressing his Indian fans, the singer urged them not to feel sad about the situation and assured them that he misses them too. “I don’t miss working over there, but I miss you guys,” said Aslam and thanked them for continuing to stand by him despite the tensions between the two countries.
He went on to add, “I thank those who have banned me as well, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to explore myself.” Atif further said that had it not been for the ban, he may not have had the opportunity to create and explore his own music.
Why Is Atif Aslam Banned In India?
Pakistani artistes were banned in India in 2016 amid rising tensions between the countries.
Atif Aslam’s Gurgaon concert was also cancelled at the time and industry bodies had passed resolutions against hiring singers and actors from Pakistan.
Following the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, the boycott intensified, with the All India Cine Workers Association also announcing a ban on Pakistani artistes working in the Indian film industry.
