Amazing work of IIT Delhi and DRDO: Made their own ‘spy balloon’, now the enemy is in no trouble. IIT Delhi And Drdo Unveil Indigenous Aerostat For High Altitude Surveillance

Aerostat Technology: IIT Delhi in collaboration with DRDO and a startup has created a cheap tactical aerostat in the country. Which will monitor up to a height of 20 kilometers. Till now India used to buy such technology from America.

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on Wednesday demonstrated a low-cost tactical aerostat made in the country. It has been created in collaboration with Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and a domestic startup.

IIT-Delhi’s indigenous aerostat ready

IIT Delhi Professor Bhupen Singh Bhatola said that the institute has developed an indigenous tactical aerostat. It is capable of carrying surveillance and communication payloads at altitudes of up to 20 kilometers, which will reduce the country’s dependence on imported systems.

Will monitor up to 20 km height

  • Bhatola said, “This is an aerostat, that is, a big balloon lighter than air. It can be called an elevated platform which can be taken to a height of 20 kilometers. You can put payloads like cameras, IR detectors or communication networks on it. By taking it to a higher altitude, it can cover a larger area. Till now it was used only in the defense sector and was sourced from America. DRDO wanted to make it in India only and we Worked towards preparing the material for this. Dr. Neeraj Mandlekar, who took training in this project, started a startup and developed the skill of shaping this material. This is a joint effort of IIT-Delhi and a startup.
  • He said that this tactical aerostat made in the country can stay in the air for a longer time than drones, can lift heavy payloads and can also help in logistics operations. He also said that in future there is a great possibility of this technology being used in common civil works also.
  • Bhatola further said, “There are two big differences between this aerostat and a drone. The drone is powered. It can stay in the air for a longer time as compared to a drone. It can carry heavy payload and can also supply goods. We think that in the future it can be used for civilian purposes also. We can say with confidence that we can provide this solution to the customers.”
