The deserted streets of Sector-55 of Noida turned into terror when a young man riding a scooter started chasing women and attacking them with scissors from behind. Ghaziabad resident Ankit Verma was arrested after CCTV, electronic surveillance and local intelligence. Police are now investigating whether the “Noida serial scissor attacker” was involved in more crimes.
Noida/Ghaziabad: The police have finally arrested a ‘mad’ attacker who has been synonymous with fear among women for the last few days on the streets of Noida, the hi-tech city of Uttar Pradesh. This accused, a resident of Ghaziabad, used to suddenly attack women and girls passing through the deserted roads of Noida with scissors from behind and run away. While exposing this sensational case, the police have recovered the scooter used in the crime and blood stained scissors from the accused.
That dreadful evening of Sector-55: When suddenly attacked from behind
This panic started on May 22 on a road in Sector-55, Noida. Two women were going towards their destination when an unknown man riding a two-wheeler followed them. As soon as he saw the deserted area, he increased his speed and attacked the women from behind with scissors. In this attack, both the women fell down bleeding, while the accused ran away in the blink of an eye. After this horrific incident, a case was immediately registered at Sector-58 police station and several police teams were deployed in search of the attacker.

CCTV footage and electronic surveillance: ‘Psycho’ attacker trapped in this trap
This case had become a big challenge for Noida Police as there was no clue of the attacker. Police teams started scanning the footage of CCTV cameras installed in and around the incident site within a radius of several kilometers. Along with this, electronic surveillance and local intelligence system were activated. After technical input and ground links, the suspect was finally identified as Ankit Verma, a resident of Ghaziabad. Ankit used to work in a private company in Noida. Based on an accurate information, the police laid siege and caught him from Sector-55/56 road.

Confirming the high-profile arrest, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Manisha Singh said, “The Sector 58 police team had been receiving inputs for the last several days about a person who used to target girls on deserted roads. Our team was continuously laying a trap and on May 23, this accused was arrested.” Police interrogation revealed that he deliberately chose routes where there was less crowd. However, what was his real motive behind carrying out such deadly attacks on women still remains a mystery. The police is investigating deeply whether Ankit is suffering from any mental illness (psychopathic behavior) or there is some old enmity or distorted mentality behind it. At present, the police is also investigating whether he has committed similar incidents in other areas of the city also. After this arrest, the police have increased patrolling in sensitive areas keeping in mind the safety of women.
“Complaints were being received for many days”
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Manisha Singh said that for the last several days, complaints of women being attacked from behind were being received. He said that after the arrest of the accused, he is now being thoroughly interrogated and security has been increased in the area.
