It was established during the Biden administration
The Hill reported that the first meeting of the Economic Diplomacy Action Group (EDAG) took place two years after it was established during the Biden administration. The committee, made up of federal agency leaders, will ‘shape the framework and focus of US economic statecraft to advance US foreign policy priorities’, including ‘US leadership in AI,’ a State official told The Hill.
It added that Rubio co-sponsored legislation in Congress that created the EDAG framework in 2019, according to the State Department’s website. The ‘Championing American Business through Diplomacy Act of 2019’ was passed to ‘promote US business competitiveness by strengthening US government support for US private sector interests internationally’.
Rubio’s other important roles
Rubio’s hosting of the first meeting of EDAG is part of several key initiatives of the Trump 2.0 administration, led by the Secretary of State. The Hill highlighted how Rubio also held the position of acting National Security Advisor, becoming the first Secretary of State to hold both roles since Henry Kissinger in 1973.
It states that Trump had made Rubio the acting administrator of the US Agency for International Development before the agency becomes inactive in 2025. Trump also appointed Rubio as acting archivist at the National Archives and Records Administration after the previous archivist was fired. Rubio has not been in this last role since February. (ANI)
