Thursday Fast: In Sanatan Dharma, Lord Vishnu is considered the god who maintains the world. Ekadashi date and Thursday have been dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Special worship and fasting of Lord Vishnu on both these days has been prescribed in the religious scriptures. Thursday is considered a special occasion to get the blessings of Lord Vishnu. On this day, devotees worship God and observe fast as per rituals.
There is a religious belief that worshiping and worshiping Lord Vishnu on Thursday brings auspicious results. Happiness comes in life. The house remains stocked with food and money. On this day, Srimad Bhagwat Geeta is recited in many temples. Anyone, male or female, can observe the fast on Thursday. Unmarried people who wish to get married can also keep fast on Thursday. According to religious beliefs, fasting on 16 Thursdays is auspicious.
Udyapan should be done after fasting on 16 Thursdays.
After observing fast on 16 Thursdays, the fast should be broken on 17th Thursday. By doing this all the wishes are fulfilled. Fasting on 16 Thursdays definitely proves to be very fruitful for those women and men whose marriage is getting delayed, there is Guru Dosh in their horoscope or who are facing financial crisis. It is believed that by observing fast on 16 Thursdays one gets special blessings of Lord Vishnu. Thursday fast can be observed for 1, 3, 5, 7 or even 9 years. It is auspicious to start the fast on Thursday from the date of Anuradha Nakshatra and Shukla Paksha of the month. This fast is not observed in the month of Paush.
Method of Thursday fast
- On Thursday morning, wake up before sunrise, take bath and wear yellow clothes.
- Take a resolution to fast while meditating on Lord Vishnu.
- Then during the puja, offer yellow clothes, flowers, fruits, sweets etc. to Lord Vishnu.
- Worship banana tree and use banana leaves during the fast.
- Light a lamp during the puja and read the story of the fast.
- At last perform Aarti of Lord Vishnu.
Thursday fasting rules
- Do not consume salt during Thursday fast.
- Do not consume banana.
- Do not wear black and blue clothes.
- Do not insult saints, animals and birds.
- Do not sew.
- Avoid buying puja items.
- Women should not wash their hair.
- Do not cut nails.
