Travellers flying between Delhi and Melbourne will see a very different Air India experience from 1 July. The airline is replacing its Boeing 787-8 on the route with an upgraded Boeing 777-300ER, adding First Class, more premium seats, onboard Wi-Fi, and a refreshed long-haul cabin.
For Indian travellers heading to Australia, the change brings one of Air India’s best international products to a route popular with students, business travellers, and families.
Bigger Aircraft, More Premium Seats
The upgraded Boeing 777-300ER is configured with:
- 8 First Class suites
- 40 fully flat Business Class beds
- 280 Economy Class seats
That is a clear jump from the Boeing 787-8 currently operating the route, which offers 28 Business Class seats and 241 Economy seats, with no First Class cabin.
The extra premium capacity should also improve seat availability for passengers looking to redeem loyalty points or upgrade their bookings.
What Passengers Can Expect Onboard
The upgraded aircraft introduces several improvements for long-haul travellers, including:
- First Class private suites with lie-flat beds and personalised service
- Fully flat Business Class seats with more privacy
- Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the flight
- Refreshed Indian and international meal options with premium beverages
- A larger inflight entertainment library featuring movies, TV shows and music
Air India’s long-haul upgrades are no longer limited to flagship routes. The airline is gradually bringing its improved product to more international destinations, a sign that competition on premium travel to Australia is becoming sharper.

Eligible First and Business Class passengers departing from Delhi will also have access to Air India’s new Maharaja Lounge at Delhi Airport, offering upgraded dining, seating, and pre-flight facilities before departure.
