The story of this Jyotirlinga is related to a devotee of Lord Shiva, for whose protection Lord Shiva appeared on earth and then settled here. Let us know the mythological story of Nageshwar Jyotirlinga.

According to the story of Shiva Purana…

According to the story of Shiva Purana, there was a demon named Daruka. He performed severe penance for Mother Parvati and after pleasing her, he obtained a boon from her. Her husband’s name was Daruk. Both of them lived in a beautiful forest situated on the western sea. The residents there were very upset with the disturbances of these two. Then all of them together went to sage Aurva and told him their sorrow. The sage started doing penance for his welfare. When the gods came to know that Sage Aurva had cursed the demons, they all came for war.

After this a fierce war started between the gods and demons. With the effect of his boon, Daruka established this forest in the sea. The demons started living happily there. One day Daruka came to earth from the sea. He saw a boat with innumerable people floating in the sea. Then he called the demons and imprisoned everyone. There was also a Vaishya among them, whose name was Supriya. He started worshiping Lord Shiva while in prison. In this way the rest of the prisoners also started worshiping God and six months passed.

Lord Shiva appeared after hearing the call of the devotee.

One day a messenger from Daruk saw Supriya worshiping. He went and told Daruk. On this Daruk came to the Vaishya and asked whom he was worshipping. Vaishya Supriya did not give any answer. On this Daruk became ready to kill the Vaishya. Vaishya closed his eyes and started praising Lord Shiva. Then Lord Shankar appeared there. He killed Daruk with his Pashupatastra. After this, all the devotees including Supriya asked him to settle at this place. Lord Shiva accepted this and sat at this place.
