The England cricket team is going to get a new coach in the test format soon. After removing Brendon McCullum from the coaching of the Test team, the England Cricket Board (ECB) was constantly in search of a new coach. This search now seems to be ending. The English media has revealed that talks have been finalized with McCullum’s former teammate regarding the team’s new coach. According to reports, former New Zealand captain and veteran batsman Stephen Fleming is going to become the new Test coach of England.

Left IPL, will now take charge in England

On Wednesday, July 29, British media reports said that in the last few days, the ECB conducted several rounds of interviews with 53-year-old Fleming. Only after this the English Board is ready to appoint the former New Zealand captain as the coach. Although the ECB has not yet made any official announcement regarding this, it is being said that an agreement has been reached regarding Fleming and he will soon be given this responsibility.

Recently, Fleming’s 19-year long career with Chennai Super Kings ended when the franchise decided to remove him after three consecutive bad seasons. Since then it was believed that he could stake claim to take up the responsibility of the next Test coach of England. Then after Andy Flower’s refusal, Fleming emerged as a better option for the ECB as an experienced coach. It is being told that Fleming has defeated former England batsmen Jonathan Trott and Richard Dawson in this matter.

The biggest challenge before Fleming

Fleming’s tenure will start with the Test series against South Africa in December 2026. The biggest challenge before Fleming, who has played 111 Test matches for New Zealand and has coaching experience of about 18 seasons in IPL, will be the selection of the new captain. They have to decide whether ODI and T20 captain Harry Brook, who is also the vice-captain till now, should be made the Test captain or Joe Root should be given this responsibility in the interim.
