According to Variety, ‘Michael’, a musical biopic based on the career of Michael Jackson, will be available to stream on Starz starting August 10. ‘Michael’, released on April 24, grossed over $1 billion worldwide, making it one of the biggest hits of 2026.
Story and cast of the film
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, ‘Michael’ tells the story of Jackson’s rise to fame. It covers his journey from his involvement in the band The Jackson 5 with his brothers in the 1960s to his ‘Bad’ tour in the late 1980s. Jackson’s nephew, Jafar Jackson, plays the lead role of the pop icon, while Juliano Valdi plays the younger Michael Jackson. Both of them made their film debut with ‘Michael’. Colman Domingo and Nia Long star as parents Joe and Katherine. According to the outlet, the project was developed with the support of several members of Jackson’s family, years after his death in 2009 at the age of 50.
Records broken at the box office
The film has been breaking records ever since its release in theaters in April this year. ‘Michael’ opened to $97 million at the domestic box office and $217 million worldwide, breaking the opening weekend record for musical biopics set by 2015’s ‘Straight Outta Compton’. In another major achievement, ‘Michael’ has become the highest-grossing musical biopic, breaking the record of 2018’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with worldwide earnings of $911 million.
