The attack caused only material damage, but no casualties, according to a statement issued by Defense Ministry spokesman Saud Abdulaziz al-Atwan. The spokesperson said special teams were immediately deployed at the location along with designated officials to enforce necessary security protocols. There is currently an operation to clean up the remains and debris left by unmanned aerial vehicles.
Located in the Al-Zahra province of northern Kuwait, Al-Abdali Terminal serves as the main terrestrial transit point for commercial freight and vehicular passenger traffic connecting the country to neighboring Iraq.
Iran claims: retaliatory attacks on American targets
The border incident comes amid a broader wave of regional military actions, as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and military launched retaliatory strikes targeting US military infrastructure in Kuwait and Jordan, claiming to have destroyed key air defense systems, logistics depots and drone facilities.
In a statement broadcast by Iranian state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the IRGC said its forces attacked US bases in Jordan in response to continued US military actions against Iranian territory.
The IRGC said, “The honorable and noble people of Jordan, your Mujahideen brothers in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, in response to punishing the child-killing American military and repeated attacks on the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, carried out a lightning-speed attack on American targets, destroying a radar of the American THAAD missile defense system.”
The IRGC further claimed that the strikes destroyed a Patriot system and a C-RAM radar, as well as fuel tanks, a large helicopter equipment warehouse, and a maintenance facility at a US base.
Addressing the Jordanian public, the IRGC claimed its respect for Jordan’s territorial integrity, while alleging that the presence of US bases is a violation of national sovereignty, and said: “It is our legal, religious and logical right to target the aggressor of our country and the murderer of our children from wherever they attack.”
Separately, the Iranian military announced the execution of the 23rd phase of “Operation Lightning”, confirming drone strikes against three US bases in Kuwait. According to the army’s public relations department, loitering munitions hit ammunition and logistics storage at the Doha base, fuel facilities at the Ali Al Salem base and an ammunition depot at Camp Arifjan.
The statement said, “In response to the continued arrogance and aggression of the evil enemy against our country, the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in the twenty-third phase of ‘Operation Lightning’, a few hours ago, targeted the child-killing US military ammunition and logistics depot at Doha base, fuel tanks at Ali al-Salem base and ammunition depot at Arifjan Camp in Kuwait with massive strikes of its destructive drones.”
In an additional statement targeting operations in Kuwait, the IRGC claimed attacks on Ali Al Salem Air Base, which targeted a military equipment warehouse, a Patriot missile defense battery and an MQ-9 drone hangar. Housing quarters, communications infrastructure and helicopter facilities at the al-Adiri barracks were also targeted, the group said. Reiterating its stance on Gulf countries, the IRGC said: “It is the US that has violated your territorial integrity and sovereignty, not us. We are attacking lands occupied by the US military, an army that knows nothing but crime.”
American Central Command also confirmed the attacks
The tensions escalated after a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that it had carried out military strikes against Iranian infrastructure for the 12th consecutive night, targeting naval capabilities, drone and missile storage, coastal surveillance networks and air defense assets.
“At 10:30 p.m. (ET) on July 22, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces conducted another round of strikes against Iran for the 12th consecutive night,” CENTCOM said, noting that these operations are aimed at reducing Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping and civilian seafarers.
Centcom said US forces have attacked dozens of land-based military installations this month, while resuming a naval blockade against Iran following the breakdown of a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed last month. The command noted that more than 50,000 US military personnel serving in the Middle East are in a state of high readiness.
Situation worsened due to breach of agreement
The current military exchange marks a sharp escalation in the Middle East after the collapse of the 14-point memorandum of understanding, which was intended to halt hostilities and facilitate negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and regional maritime security, led to renewed US strikes on Iranian assets and Iranian attacks against US bases in the Gulf region.
