In the important meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Netherlands Prime Minister Rob Jetten, both the countries gave the status of “Strategic Partnership” to the relationship. During this period, 17 agreements were signed to increase cooperation in many important areas including defence, semiconductor, critical minerals, artificial intelligence and green energy.

Concern of both countries on tension in West Asia

In the conversation held on Saturday evening, both the leaders expressed serious concern over the deteriorating situation in West Asia. He said that increasing tensions in the region could affect global energy supplies and trade networks. Both countries particularly emphasized the need to maintain unhindered movement of ships in the Strait of Hormuz. This sea route is considered very important for about 20 percent of the world’s energy supply. According to experts, tension in the region has increased further after the attacks on Iran by America and Israel. In such a situation, India and Netherlands opposed any kind of restrictive measures and advocated free trade and stable supply chain.

Message of peace on Ukraine-Russia war

Russia-Ukraine War was also discussed in detail in the meeting. Both the leaders said that the solution to any conflict should not be found through war, but through dialogue and diplomacy. India and the Netherlands also agreed on the need to enhance global cooperation towards regional stability and just peace.

Special emphasis on trade, defense and technology

The two countries launched a comprehensive “Strategic Partnership Roadmap” after the meeting. It aims to strengthen cooperation in future areas such as trade, investment, defence, security, space technology, semiconductor, AI and quantum computing.

Apart from this, Green Hydrogen Development Roadmap was also launched, which will open new possibilities in the field of clean energy. In the defense sector, both the countries agreed to work together on joint manufacturing, technology transfer and joint venture models.

Netherlands is an important gateway to Europe for India

Netherlands is considered a major trading partner of India in Europe. In the year 2024-25, trade between the two countries will reach about $27.8 billion. Netherlands is also the fourth largest foreign investor in India. At the same time, Port of Rotterdam is considered the main gateway to Europe for Indian exporters. This is the reason why economic relations between the two countries are continuously strengthening.

Cooperation will increase on semiconductor and critical minerals

There was also a special focus in the meeting on strengthening the semiconductor sector and critical minerals supply chain. Both countries welcomed the initiative to enhance cooperation between the Dutch Semicon Competence Center and the Indian Semiconductor Mission. Experts believe that semiconductors are going to be the most important sector of the global economy and technological competition in the coming years. In such a situation, this partnership is considered very strategically important for India.

Indian students and professionals will benefit

Migration and mobility agreement has also been agreed between India and Netherlands. This can open new opportunities for studies and jobs in the Netherlands for Indian students, researchers and professionals. Both the countries have also talked about increasing cooperation in skill development and innovation sector.

Shared message against terrorism

Netherlands Prime Minister Rob Jetten strongly condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April 2025 and assured full support to India against terrorism. Both the leaders stressed on adopting a “zero tolerance” policy against terrorism and said that no double standards should be accepted in the matter of terrorism.

Prime Minister Modi said that relations between India and Netherlands have progressed rapidly in the last decade. He said that there are many similarities between the two countries like democratic values, responsible behavior and market based economy.
