Piggery Farming: Pig farming is becoming a rapidly growing profitable business in rural and urban areas. Due to low cost, high fertility and continuously increasing demand for meat, it is proving to be a better medium of sustainable income for farmers and youth. Pigs grow faster than other animals. A female sow gives birth to 8 to 12 piglets at a time, which become marketable in about 45 to 60 days. In Chhattisgarh too, many youth are earning good income by adopting modern methods of pig farming instead of traditional employment. BSc Agriculture graduate Gracy Dugga, resident of Kinjoli village of Bakavand development block of Bastar district, also took a step in the same direction and set an example of self-reliance by setting up a modern pig rearing project.
Bastar Success Story: Gracy Dugga left her job and chose pig farming business.
Gracy Dugga completed B.Sc Agriculture from Dehradun, Uttarakhand in the year 2023. Instead of pursuing higher education or a job, he decided to start his own venture in agriculture and animal husbandry sector. He chose pig farming because its demand was continuously increasing in Bastar region, while still less people are working in this sector on a commercial level. His aim was to become an example of employment and inspiration for the youth by setting up a big farm in a scientific manner. The Government of India is also running schemes like National Livestock Mission to promote pig farming. Under this scheme, subsidy up to 50 percent on the project cost is provided to the eligible beneficiaries.
Modern Pig Farming Project: Modern unit worth Rs 1.12 crore built with government assistance
Gracy needed technical know-how and financial assistance to set up a large-scale piggery farm. The veterinary department supported them at every level, from project preparation to technical guidance. With the help of the department, a modern pig farming project worth Rs 1 crore 12 lakh 10 thousand was prepared, which was approved under the National Livestock Mission Scheme of the Central Government. Gracy, who applied for the first time from the Scheduled Tribe category, got a subsidy of Rs 30 lakh under the scheme. She says that if government assistance had not been received, she would have been able to start the work on a small scale with only 20 to 25 pigs. Receiving the grant gave him the opportunity to set up a large-scale farm with modern facilities.

Scientific Pig Farming: Success achieved through modern technology and better management
Under the guidance of doctors and agricultural experts of the Animal Husbandry Department, improved breed of pigs were brought from Tamil Nadu to Gracy’s farm. Special attention was paid to vaccination, nutrition and health management of animals at the farm. The farm started in May 2025 with 110 breeding pigs. These included 100 female and 10 male pigs. Due to scientific care and better management, the farm has produced 202 adult reproductive boars and about 206 piglets by June 2026. Currently there are more than 400 pigs in his farm, which shows the success of this project.
Pig Farming Business: Earned around Rs 4 lakh from the first sale itself
Now commercial sale of piglets of improved breed has also started from Gracy Dugga’s farm. Pigs are being supplied from his farm to other local markets including Raipur. Recently he earned an income of Rs 3 lakh 90 thousand by selling 65 piglets at the rate of Rs 6 thousand per piglet. This proves that by adopting modern technology and scientific methods, pig farming can become a successful and profitable business.
