According to data given by officials in Jammu and Kashmir, 2897 smugglers have been arrested in the last 15 months. Recently, Home Minister Amit Shah has also emphasized the policy of ‘zero tolerance’ against terrorism and Narco Terror in a security review meeting during his three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. This is clearly indicating that the attack of security agencies against drug smugglers is going to be even more strict in the coming time.
According to officials, there has been a significant increase in action in drug crimes. In the union territory, 2,897 arrests and 350 have been detained in 1,978 cases related to drugs during a period of 15 months. According to the data, 1,514 cases were registered in the year 2024, resulting in 2,260 arrests and 274 detained under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act.
Drug dealers seized assets worth Rs 12 crore
Officials said 464 cases were registered in the first three months (January to March) of 2025, including 637 arrests and 76 custody. Authorities also seized assets worth Rs 12 crore of drug dealers in cases related to commercial quantity of drugs. He said that efforts are on to deal with the danger of drugs and to raise awareness among the people on this issue.
He said that in 2023-2024, opium crop on 273 acres of land and cannabis crop on 1,642 acres of land was destroyed. Apart from this, more than 1,900 awareness programs were organized in the districts, of which 347 programs were held in Kupwara and Handwara. He said that 195 sessions have been organized to train 4,267 officers since 2022.
Licenses of 73 pharmacies suspended
Officials said that 27 departmental inquiry was started in the year 2024, as a result of which sentence was given in 16 cases. About 20 medical facilities are operational in Jammu and Kashmir, with 2,332 new patients and 77,382 OPD visits in the first quarter of 2025.
Officials said that the police and social welfare department have reported 1,762 new patients and 450 patients admitted in 2024. Also, it is planned to expand services in Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama and Ganderbal districts. Also, 22,379 licenses were reviewed in 2025 in action against pharmacies ignoring the guidelines. Under this, 73 licenses were suspended and 4 were canceled.
