Located in Vishwanath Gali in Banaras, ancient city of Uttar Pradesh, India, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated on the west bank of the holy river Ganges and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The city of Varanasi is also called Kashi. Hence this temple is called Kashi Vishwanath Temple. According to Hindu scriptures, the temple is considered the central part of worship in Shaiva culture.

The main deity of the temple is known as Shri Vishwanath and Vishweshwar, which literally means God of the universe. It is believed that once in this temple, bathing in the holy Ganges gives salvation. Varanasi was called Kashi in ancient times, so this temple is famous as Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It was here that Saint Eknathji completed the composition of Shri Eknathi Bhagwat, the great text of the Varkari sect and the Kasinresh and scholars took out the Shobha Yatra on the elephant of that book.

On the night of Mahashivaratri, a grand procession from major temples goes to the temple of Baba Vishwanath ji with drums and drums etc. The Vishwanath temple was repeatedly destroyed by many Muslim rulers throughout the history. The Mughal ruler Aurangzeb was the last Muslim ruler who demolished this temple and built the present Gyanvapi mosque in its place. The current temple was built in 1780 by Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar. It was later built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh using 1000 kg of pure gold in 1835.

This temple is the original place of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. It is said that when Goddess Parvati was living at her father’s house, where her health was not good at all. One day Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva to take her home. Lord Shiva obeyed Goddess Parvati and brought her to Kashi and established himself as Vishwanath-Jyotirlinga. The temple is decorated with a unique umbrella which is made of pure gold. It is often believed that people who ask for a vow after seeing this golden umbrella are fulfilled.
