World Heritage Day: Iran, Israel or America, who has the most historical heritage?

Celebrating World Heritage Day started in the year 1983.

World Heritage Day is celebrated every year on 18 April. On this day the world remembers its old heritage. UNESCO includes those places in the World Heritage List, which have great importance. The theme of the year 2026 is – Emergency response to living heritage in the context of conflicts and disasters. Celebrating this special day started in the year 1983. At present there is discussion all over the world about Iran, Israel or America. There are historical heritage sites in all three countries.

Come, on the pretext of World Heritage Day, let us know who has the most world heritages among the warring America, Iran and Israel. According to UNESCO’s list, Iran comes on top among these three countries in the list of world heritage. There are 29 world heritage sites here. United States of America is at number two and this powerful country has 26 heritage sites. Israel is at number three in this matter. There are only nine world heritage sites here.

Most of the sites in the three countries are still preserved. Many places are open for tourism. Some places are within cities. Some are merely archaeological remains. Some are also under pressure from weather, pollution, crowds, earthquakes, climate change and maintenance.

Why is Iran at the forefront?

The history of Iran is very old. There is a long tradition of Persian empire, ancient cities, desert culture, water management, gardens and religious architecture. For this reason, most of its places have been successful in getting a place in the list. Some of the major sites of Iran, their current status and locations are as follows.

  • Persepolis: It was the royal capital of the ancient Persian Empire. It is currently located near Shiraz in Fars province. Today it is preserved as a huge archaeological remains. The stone carvings and parts of the palace can still be seen.

  • Meidan Emam, Isfahan: This is one of the most beautiful royal squares in Iran. It is in Isfahan city. It is still active and safe in the middle of the city. Mosques, markets and historical buildings are present here.

  • Bam and its Cultural Landscape: This huge fort made of mud is in Kerman province. It suffered heavy damage in the 2003 earthquake. It has been extensively conserved and renovated.
  • Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System: Located in Khuzestan province, it is a wonderful example of ancient water engineering. Many parts of it can be seen even today. It is also a center of conservation and study.
  • Lut Desert: This is a famous desert natural area of ​​Iran. Located in south-eastern Iran. This is a naturally protected area. Extreme temperatures and unique landforms are found here.
  • Hyrcanian Forests: These are very old forest areas. Located in northern Iran, near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. These are protected forests. Their importance is huge due to biodiversity.

Overall, most of Iran’s sites are either well-preserved remains, or still living cultural areas. In some places, challenges of weather, urban pressure and conservation also remain. Yet Iran’s heritage is very rich and diverse.

Why is America in second place?

The special thing about America’s World Heritage Sites is that there are a lot of natural sites there. The national parks there are famous all over the world. There are also sites related to independence, modern architecture and indigenous history. Some important places of America, their location and current status are as follows.

  • Statue of Liberty: It is a global symbol of freedom. It is in the famous New York City. It is a protected national monument. Even today a large number of tourists come here.

  • Independence Hall: This is a historical building associated with American independence. It is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is very well preserved. This is a major place in the political history of America.
  • Mesa Verde National Park: It is famous for its ancient houses built in the rocks in the state of Colorado. This is a protected archaeological national park. The remains of the native culture are preserved here.
  • Chaco Culture: It was a Chinese settlement and religious center located in New Mexico. Today it is protected as an archaeological site.
  • Yellowstone National Park: It is one of the most famous national parks in the world. It is located primarily in Wyoming, as well as parts of Montana and Idaho. This is an active nature reserve. Hot springs and wildlife are its hallmarks.
  • Grand Canyon National Park: This is a great example of the geological history of the Earth. Located in Arizona. This is a protected national park. There is a lot of tourism, so conservation is also very important.

  • Yosemite National Park: It is famous for high rocks and waterfalls. Located in California. It is well protected, but challenges such as fire, drought and crowding remain.
  • Everglades National Park: This is a huge wetland located in Florida. It is protected, but problems like water flow, pollution and environmental pressure have long been discussed.
  • Papahānaumokuākea: This is an important area from both marine and cultural point of view. Located in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands region. This is a protected marine area. Its ecological importance is very great.

America’s list shows that heritage there does not just mean buildings. Nature is also a major basis of world heritage there.

Why is Israel in third place?

Israel is a small country. Relatively new too. There are less World Heritage sites here but all of them are of cultural importance. These provide a glimpse of religious history, archaeology, trade routes, human development and modern urban planning. The main sites of Israel, their location and current status are as follows.

  • Masada: This is a hill fort near the Dead Sea in southern Israel. This is a protected archaeological site. It is also considered a symbol of national identity.
  • Old City of Acre: This is an old port city located on the Mediterranean coast of northern Israel. It is a historic city still inhabited today. Old forts, roads and buildings are present here.
