Himachal Pradesh Congress chief Pratibha Singh has said that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may get the only Rajya Sabha seat falling vacant after the six-year term of BJP national president JP Nadda ends on April 2. When asked about sending names from the state, he said that he will discuss the matter with senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and if he is willing then this seat can go to him.
In the 2019 general elections, Sonia Gandhi had contested from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency, while Priyanka Gandhi is currently a member of neither the Lok Sabha nor the Rajya Sabha. At a function organized to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 76th death anniversary, Pratibha Singh, while answering a question from media persons, said that if Sonia Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi wish, their names can be considered.
After the announcement of election schedule for 56 Rajya Sabha seats including one seat in Himachal Pradesh, the Congress party has started searching for candidates. With a clear majority, Congress has 40 seats in the 68-member state assembly. One Rajya Sabha seat is falling vacant after the end of Nadda’s six-year term on April 2.
Congress’s victory from this one seat is certain. At present, all three Rajya Sabha seats in the state are with BJP. Apart from Nadda, two other Rajya Sabha members from the state are Indu Goswami and Sikandar Kumar. Voting for the sole seat will be held next month during the budget session of the Assembly from February 14 to February 29.
