De Silva scored a memorable century

Sri Lanka had a very bad start on the first day of the first Test match being played in Antigua. Sri Lanka’s top order completely disintegrated due to the havoc of the West Indies fast bowlers and the team lost its 3 big wickets on the score of just 42 runs. At this critical juncture, captain Dhananjay de Silva stepped onto the crease. He along with experienced batsman Dinesh Chandimal took the innings forward. There was a partnership of 68 runs between the two for the fourth wicket, which rescued the team from the initial shocks. Chandimal played a very solid innings of 54 runs before getting out.

With the dismissal of Chandimal and Kushal Mendis at consecutive intervals, the Sri Lankan team once again came on the backfoot and its score became 110 runs for 5 wickets. But Captain de Silva did not budge. De Silva completed his brilliant century facing 150 balls. This is the 13th century of his Test career. De Silva, who stood like a rock throughout the innings, finally became the victim of fast bowler Jaden Seals in the 65th over of the match. Before getting out, he played a memorable and captaincy inning of 120 runs with the help of 17 fours, due to which the Sri Lankan team was able to score 308 runs in the first innings.

Became the country’s number-1 player in this matter

On the basis of this century innings, he has also made a big record in his name. He has now become the joint first player for Sri Lanka to score the highest score of more than 50 (50+) in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC).
