Why was Vaibhav Suryavanshi made the vice-captain?
Eastern Zone Selection Committee member Pravanjan Malik explained the reason behind making Vaibhav Suryavanshi the vice-captain. He said, ‘Vaibhav Suryavanshi has not been made the captain, he has only been made the vice-captain. The captain is Ishan Kishan. Ishan Kishan is a wicketkeeper so he will remain fully present in the match. By giving responsibility to Vaibhav, we want to make him more mature.
‘One day Vaibhav will become the captain of Team India’
Pranjan Malik expressed hope that one day Vaibhav Suryavanshi will also become the captain of Team India. He said, ‘Suryavanshi has a chance to fulfill the responsibility of vice-captain in the Duleep Trophy. We believe that young players should be given responsibility. Who knows that one day he will become the captain of Team India. This is our thinking behind giving him the vice-captaincy. He is performing well for the country, he had a good IPL season for Rajasthan Royals. He is also the vice-captain of Bihar Ranji team.
Need for big innings in big format
There is no doubt that Vaibhav Suryavanshi is the best player of T20 cricket. But it is also true that as the format becomes bigger, Vaibhav’s performance becomes smaller. Vaibhav Suryavanshi has played 8 first class matches so far in which only 207 runs have come from his bat. His average is only 17.25 and he has been able to score only one half-century. It is clear that Suryavanshi needs to show her strength in red ball cricket.
