Australia’s Pink Lake.
PM Modi is on a visit to Australia, a country which is famous among tourists all over the world for its Pink Lake. Interestingly, there is a pink lake amidst the blue water which is no less than a wonder. It is on Middle Island of Western Australia. Its name is Lake Hillier. Its water looks like the dark pink color of bubblegum. The special thing is that its pink color remains throughout the year. Neither rain nor weather can change this.
This pink lake and its water have been a puzzle among scientists for a long time. After research, it was found out why this lake remains pink throughout the year amidst the surrounding blue water.
Who discovered this lake?
It was discovered by British explorer Matthew Flinders in the year 1802. He named this lake after his team member William Hillier. The 600 meter long lake is surrounded by dense forests of eucalyptus and paperbark and white sand bars and blue waters. When viewed from an airplane, it appears like a pink spot in the middle of a blue sea.

How about a pink lake amidst blue water?
Why is Australia’s Lake Hillier pink? Now let us understand the science behind it. Scientists have given reasons behind its pink color. They claim that the amount of salt in it and the microorganisms growing in it are high. The algae present in it have adapted themselves to live in the lake. When algae are exposed to sunlight and high concentrations of salt, they produce a pigment called beta-carotene to protect their cells. This pigment protects the algae from the strong rays of the sun. Beta carotene is also found in carrots and other fruits. This is why they are pink or red.
The water of this lake is up to 10 times saltier than the sea.
Scientists also argue that certain types of halophilic bacteria (salt-loving bacteria) also play a role in maintaining this pink color. These bacteria grow in highly salty water and due to the pigments present in them, they make the color of the water darker.
