mythology of saavan
The story of the month of Sawan is related to the churning of the ocean. According to the story, the churning of the ocean was started by the gods and demons in the month of Sawan itself. A total of 14 gems were obtained from this churning of the ocean, but the first one to come out was Halahal poison. This poison had the power to burn the world. Then the gods and demons appealed to Mahadev to save the world. To save the world, Mahadev drank all the poison and took it in his throat.
Due to the effect of poison, Mahadev’s entire throat turned blue and he came to be known as Neelkanth. Since then, this month of Saavan is dedicated to Mahadev, symbolizing Mahadev’s sacrifice towards the world. After consuming poison, Mahadev’s body temperature started increasing due to its effect. Then all the gods performed Jalabhishek of Mahadev. Due to this, the effect of poison was eliminated from Lord Shiva’s body. Since then the tradition of Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva is going on in Sawan.
