After this, his son King Janmejaya organized a big snake yagya to take revenge from the snakes. It is said that in this Yagya a large number of snakes and serpents started falling into the fire. This created a crisis for the Naga dynasty. At that time, Aastik Muni, with the help of his wisdom and penance, convinced King Janmejaya to stop the Yagya and thus saved the Naga dynasty from destruction. According to religious belief, this incident happened on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. For this reason, the tradition of worshiping the snake god is believed to have started on this day.

According to Drik Panchang, in the year 2026, Panchami Tithi will start from 4:52 pm on 16th August and will continue till 5 pm on 17th August. On the basis of Udaya Tithi, the festival of Nag Panchami will be celebrated on Monday, August 17, 2026. The auspicious time for worshiping Nag Devta on this day is said to be from 5:51 am to 8:29 am. In this way devotees will get about 2 hours 37 minutes time for worship.
