thyroid patient
There is a thyroid gland in our body. When it does not produce thyroid as per requirement, it causes thyroid disease. Many patients of this disease question why their appetite sometimes increases and sometimes decreases? But what is the relation between thyroid and appetite? Is there really such a thing? Let us know from experts about what medical science says.
There are two types of thyroid. One is hypothyroidism in which Thyroid Hormones are produced less and this slows down the metabolism. The second is hyperthyroidism. In this, more thyroid hormones are produced in the body, hence metabolism becomes faster. This metabolism is the reason for feeling more or less hungry.
How does hunger increase or decrease?
Regarding this, Dr. Deepak Kumar Suman, former resident at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, says that the metabolism slows down in thyroid patients who have the problem of hypothyroidism. Because of this, the body burns calories slowly and due to this the appetite also reduces. Whereas those who have hyperthyroidism, their metabolism becomes faster. Because of this, the body burns calories rapidly and the patient may feel hungry again and again.
Why do I feel hungry yet lose weight?
Due to hyperthyroidism in thyroid, one may feel hungry frequently, but in these people, despite eating more, weight starts decreasing, symptoms like sweating, nervousness and rapid heartbeat can also be seen. Weight reduces because in this condition the energy consumption in the body also starts increasing and due to fast metabolism, weight starts reducing even after eating a lot.
It is important to take care of food
Dr. Deepak says that it is important to take care of diet in thyroid. Patients should eat more protein and green vegetables, while those who have hyperthyroidism should drink less tea and coffee. Decrease or increase in appetite can be a normal symptom of thyroid, but if it persists then it is important to consult a doctor.
