As per tradition, since the British colonial period, Indian traffic rules have required all vehicles to drive on the left. The British introduced these rules before India’s independence in 1947. Since then, vehicles in India have continued to follow left-hand driving.
If we observe horse-drawn carriage drivers, we can see that they prefer to sit on the right side of the cart. This is because it gives them a clear view of oncoming traffic. It was also chosen for safety reasons, as sitting on the right side of the cart provides better visibility and control.
Over time, newer vehicles and cars took over Indian streets, but the driver’s seat remained on the right side of the vehicle. However, countries in the West do not follow this practice.
