Kohli ‘Awkward’ While Addressing School Kids

Virat Kohli inaugurated his childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma’s WACA Academy Branch at Delhi Public School in RK Puram, but what grabbed the attention of the event was Team India’s former captain and star batter’s speech, wherein he admitted he felt ‘awkward’ while addressing the students as he is no longer used to speaking in such etups anymore after moving away from the school environment early to focus on cricket.

“Thank you for having me. I’m not used to speaking in schools, so this is going to be a bit awkward for me because I moved away from the school setup long ago for cricket, and that’s what I’m going to talk about,” Kohli said.

“I understand the environment of a school. I’ve been through the same process and stage that all you kids are a part of right now. And I can just share from my own experience how my focus and priority changed very early on in my life,” he added.

After 12th grade, Kohli moved on from formal education and dedicated himself fully to cricket, becoming India’s U19 World Cup-winning captain in 2008 before going on to represent India at the senior level later the same year.

From thereon, Kohli quickly established himself as one of the most promising young talents in Indian cricket, rapidly rising through the ranks with consistent performances for the national team and eventually going on to become one of the modern greats of the game across all formats.

Kohli’s Advice to Students on Focus and Respect

Virat Kohli, who has remained grounded and stuck to his roots even after becoming a successful batter, used the occasion to share an important message with students about discipline, honesty, and respect.

“Have respect and regard for that environment first. For your teachers, for the people who are teaching you. They are giving you a part of their lives. It’s very important to give them that respect and the focus and attention that’s required,” the former India captain said.

“I chose sport very early on in my life, but that came from a very honest place. I was very sure that I wanted to go ahead and pursue cricket, and I had to be honest with myself, my family, and also my teachers to convey to them that this is the path I want to take,” he added.
