Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and veteran Indian team spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes that CSK should now plan ahead of Stephen Fleming’s long tenure as head coach. He said that the franchise has reached a stage where it needs a new direction. On Tuesday, CSK and Fleming decided to part ways by mutual consent, bringing an end to one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He stressed that if MS Dhoni is interested in taking up the coaching role, he would be the ideal successor given his deep understanding of the team and his successful partnership with Fleming over the years.
Ashwin also said that any new coach will face uncertainty as Dhoni remains an influential figure within the franchise and continues to play a key role in discussions related to team selection and decision making.
Dhoni’s challenge will be in front of the new coach
“Fleming really understood what MS Dhoni liked, and Dhoni understood that Fleming was a great assistant, and that partnership lasted so long. I would say now is the time for Chennai Super Kings to look beyond that,” Ashwin said, according to ESPNcricinfo.
Ashwin further added, “If Dhoni is willing to do that (take over as coach), then there can be no better person than him for Chennai Super Kings. If not, they need to find someone who is able to work independently and take responsibility for their actions. I think there is a little bit of uncertainty for anyone coming into that dressing room. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a huge name, and when you are talking about a team that has He’s still a huge part of the discussion if he gets selected to play.”
Fleming’s brilliant coaching career
Fleming joined CSK as a player in the inaugural year of the IPL in 2008 and held the position of head coach from 2009. Over the next 17 years, the pair formed one of the most respected and consistent teams in franchise cricket. Under Fleming’s leadership, CSK has won five IPL trophies and two Champions League Twenty20 tournaments. The team has entered the playoffs a record 12 times, while also being a part of 10 IPL finals.
