The results of Maharashtra Assembly elections and Jharkhand Assembly elections were revealed yesterday, along with this, the results of by-elections held on many assembly seats and 2 Lok Sabha seats of the country were also revealed. In the by-election held on Nanded Lok Sabha seat of Maharashtra, Congress candidate Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan has won by 1457 votes. BJP candidate Santukrao Humbarde was leading by 35,000 votes for a time, but the last few rounds changed the entire election. Congress got 586788 votes, while BJP candidate Hambarde got 585331 votes.
Actually this seat had become vacant due to the death of Congress MP Vasantrao Chavan. Congress MP Vasantrao Chavan died just two months after the Lok Sabha elections. Congress had fielded his son from here in the by-election. BJP had made Santukrao Marotrao its candidate from here. However, a close contest was seen between the two candidates.
BJP lost after PM Modi’s claim
While addressing the workers at Delhi BJP headquarters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mentioned the by-election held on Nanded Lok Sabha seat. During the speech, he claimed that with the victory in Nanded, the number of Lok Sabha seats of BJP in Maharashtra has increased from 9 to 10. However, till then the final result of this seat had not been revealed. After some time of PM’s speech, the results came in which BJP had lost this seat, the reason behind PM Modi’s claim was that at one time BJP was leading on this seat by a huge margin.
How was the political journey of Vasantrao Chavan?
Born in Naigaon in Nanded district, Vasantrao Chavan was a Gram Panchayat member for a long time and later became a Zilla Parishad member in 1990 and 2002. He was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 2002 and became a member of the state assembly from Naigaon assembly seat. He was also an MLA from 2009 to 2014. He was also the President of Nanded District Central Cooperative Bank from 2021 to 2023. At the age of 69, he reached Parliament by winning the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, but two months after the elections, He died due to kidney disease. Now his son Ravindra Chavan has won the by-election on this Lok Sabha seat.
Congress’s victory margin decreased in Nanded
Congress had fielded Vasantrao Chavan from this seat in the Lok Sabha elections. In that election, Chavan defeated BJP candidate Prataprao Chikhlikar by more than 59 thousand votes, but the margin of victory of Congress got reduced in the by-election held here. Vasantrao Chavan’s son Ravindra Chavan could win the election from this seat by just 1457 votes. At one time during the counting of votes, it was believed that this seat had gone out of the hands of Congress, but by evening, Congress won from here by a small margin.
What is the history of Nanded Lok Sabha seat?
In the year 2014, there was a contest on Nanded Lok Sabha seat between outgoing BJP MP Prataprao Patil Chikhlikar and Congress candidate Vasant Chavan. Vasant Chavan had won by a margin of 59,442 votes. Vasant got 5,28,894 votes in the election, while Prataprao Patil Chikhlikar got 4,69,452 votes. Nanded is one of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state and is also a district.
In the parliamentary elections of 2019, this seat went to BJP’s account and Prataprao Govindrao Chikhlikar became MP. Chikhlikar got 486,806 votes while Congress’s Ashok Chavan got 4,46,658 votes.
There are 6 assembly seats under Nanded. Lok Sabha elections were held on this seat for the first time in 1952, when Congress candidate Shankarrao Telkikar had won. Then in the 1957 elections, Congress gave ticket to Devrao Namdevrao Kamble and he emerged victorious. In 1962, Tulsidas Jadhav of Congress won. In the 1967 elections, Congress changed its candidate from here and fielded Venkatrao Tirodkar and he too was victorious.
